MHI Training Approach

MHI Training has delivered first aid programmes since 2008. Many of our trainers have taken the standard first aid instructor course and have actual experience in emergency response situations and emphasise the practical application of the skills taught.

Class sizes are deliberately limited to allow participants to have actual hands-on CPR and AED practice, rather than observing the trainer only.

The training is highly focused on case scenarios and includes additional CPR practice if needed before the assessment is given.

What You’ll Learn During Standard First Aid Training?

This training equips you with emergency recognition, adult CPR + AED, injury care, and response to medical crises.

You’ll learn how to prioritise actions during the first critical minutes of an emergency, when correct sequencing directly affects outcomes.

Basic life support skills that the course covers include the DRSABC routine, CPR for adults, children, and infants, the proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator, and dealing with choking cases.

It also covers medical emergencies such as heart attack and stroke (using the FAST method), seizures, asthma attacks, diabetic emergencies, allergic reactions, and shock cases. And injury cases like bleeding control, bandaging, dealing with fractures and sprains using the RICE method, and burns cases.

Practical sessions involve repeated CPR and AED drills, as well as bandaging and treating fractures. The demonstration covers adults, children, and infants. Assessment consists of a 30-question MCQ, with an 80% pass rate.

Certification & Validity in Singapore

A Standard First Aid certification indicates an individual’s ability to perform adult CPR + AED as well as bleeding control, fractures, choking, stroke, seizures, etc.

National Registry of Coaches (NROC) and Sport Singapore recognise the certification. A standard first aid refresher course may be taken within a three-month grace window before or after expiry.

Certain higher-risk sectors require the workplace-focused version instead.

How Certification Is Obtained

To obtain certification, participants must:

  1. Register with a provider

   2. Complete the required e-learning modules

   3. Attend in-person practical training and assessment

   4. Achieve at least 80% for the MCQ and demonstrate competency in skills testing and practical assessment

Certificates are usually issued digitally within 5 working days after successful assessment.

Standard First Aid vs Occupational First Aid

Occupational First Aid is a course designed to cater to the workplace, which falls under MOM regulations, especially in higher-risk industries and companies with over 25 employees.

The difference between Standard First Aid and Occupational First Aid is not which one is better. It depends entirely on workplace risk profile and regulatory requirements.

For small offices or coaching roles, Standard First Aid is sufficient.

Which course does my company need?

Choose OFA if your organisation:

  • Employs more than 25 staff

  • Operates in construction, manufacturing, marine or chemical environments where higher workplace risk applies

MOM requires 1 first aider per 100 employees per shift.

This course is typically suitable for low-risk office environments or individual professionals who require recognised certification.

Basic vs Standard First Aid: What’s the difference?

Basic first aid is shorter and often non-accredited, and is typically intended for general awareness rather than formal workplace compliance. Standard first aid is assessed and valid for 2 years.

The curriculum follows nationally approved standards under SRFAC guidelines.

Note: OFA is also SRFAC-accredited but specifically MOM-recognised for workplace compliance in high-risk industries.

Refresher and Expiry Scenarios

To maintain continuous certification, standard first aid refresher course training should ideally be completed one to three months before expiry, although a three-month grace period is allowed after expiry. If that window is missed, the full programme must be completed again.

The course consists of the whole syllabus, which takes 12 hours, including the latest developments in the field of first aid, as well as a re-evaluation of practical skills.

Accreditation & Recognition in Singapore

Accreditation is granted by the Singapore Resuscitation and First Aid Council under the Ministry of Health. Eligible participants may qualify for SkillsFuture Credit and SSG funding, subject to prevailing government policies.

First aid certification is recognised by prominent bodies like the National Registry of Coaches (NROC), Sport Singapore, Ministry of Manpower, Early Childhood Development Agency, among others.
